Suspect killed, police officer and K-9 injured in Westminster standoff

Westminster police shot and killed an armed fugitive after he allegedly stole a car and then barricaded himself in an apartment and shot a police officer and injured a K-9, authorities say.

The name of the fugitive has not been released pending notification of family, according to a news release by Westminster police spokeswoman Kate Kazell.

The officer sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital for treatment. The officer’s name has not been released.

Westminster police tracked down the fugitive wanted on several arrest warrants around 5:20 p.m. Tuesday night, Kazell said.

When police attempted to arrest the suspect, he ran inside a home in the 1300 block of 135th Drive, she said.

Other people who were inside the home at the time fled outside. Witnesses told police that the man was armed with a gun, Kazell said.

Police told the suspect he was under arrest. They gave him multiple commands to leave the home. The fugitive refused and barricaded himself inside the home.

The Westminster SWAT team responded to the scene. The SWAT team attempted multiple tactics to get the suspect to surrender peacefully, but the suspect refused to leave the home, Kazell said.

Authorities gave warnings and safety instructions to people in surrounding homes. They were told to either evacuate or shelter themselves in their homes.

When officers entered the residence, an exchange of gunfire took place. The suspect shot and injured an officer. A K-9 was also injured during the shootout and was taken to an emergency veterinarian for treatment, Kazell said. Police shot and killed the fugitive, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
